Beauty Reporter - Scents & Sensibilities
Just like high-school cliques, perfumes can have the reputation of being naughty or nice. Sheer florals are for good girls, while potent spices have racier associations. Yann Vasnier, a perfumer at Quest International, helps us understand the new fragrance double standard.NAUGHTY Perfumes
- Live Luxe by Jennifer Lopez
- F by Ferragamo. Dominant jasmine and orange flower "let everyone know who's in charge," Vasnier says.
- Guerlain Insolence swirls together iris, violet, and red berries to create one unchanging note.
- Givenchy Ange ou Demon. The fresh orchid is angelic, but the deep rush of white thyme, saffron, and tonka bean is devilish.
- Valentino "V" Absolu. "Creamy vanilla and exotic incense evoke sensuality," Vasnier says.
NICE Perfumes
- Lovely Liquid Satin by Sarah Jessica Parker
- Vera Wang Princess with Camilla Belle
- Miss Dior Cherie Pure
- Anna Sui Secret Wish isn't coy - lemon, melon, and pineapple notes assert themselves from the first spray. White cedarwood keeps it from smelling like a produce stand.
- Betsey Johnson. The Lolita of perfumes - innocent freesia and daring musk "invites a bite on the neck," Vasnier says.
